  1. This tem was a wonderful experience for me. Of the many valid reasons, one of them I could say was the new batch itself. The year 8 girls are a delight to work with. Their eagerness and enthusiasm to learn inspires and motivtes me to look forward to the lessons. Moreover, they are very well disciplined and punctual in submitting their assignments.

They have done reasonably well in their 2nd assessments and I have noticed that quite a few techniques and requirements for extended writing that was taught in class was applied. Well done girls!

I look forward to teaching them for the rest of the academic year and I am sure that they will excel in the finals.

  2. This particular term with group D was very informative and an enjoyable experience. I studied various aspects of English writing, including letter writing, newspaper report writing, character analysis, role-play, diary writing - numerous of which I had never tried to do. While learning about these formats, the class applied it to the scenes in Macbeth (one of William Shakespeare's works).

Learning these few techniques and specific formats, I could use this knowledge by not only passing my examinations successfully, however if I were to send a job application, a complaint letter or a letter to the parents. This is only regarding letter writing and I can use newspaper writing by informing or persuading an audience (if I became a journalist or anyone in that matter). I could simply use character analysis in real life - to distiguish the right and wrong of people.

The lessons provided a solid structure and a lot of preparation time for the English assessment. They assissted me to use the right amount of adjectives, know how to construct a complex sentence including the crucial details and not forget anything while writing an excellent essay. They definitely improved my style of writing and improved my grade.

In class, we did countless activities which made the class fun, educational and not stressful. We did a role-play, guessed different celebrities, were sorted into judges, audience, role-play, radio presenters, etc and chose a suitable quote to decorate the wall with.

Alongside these amazing activities, I do not think I could make the class more interesting seeing that it is perfect already!

  6. This term we were taught about the play Macbeth which is one of Shakespeares excellent plays. Our English lessons were extremely informative and fun at the same time. As Ashisha said, We did include a lot of ICT in our classwork which made it really interesting. We were assigned to do many different types of writing including: Diary writing, Letter writing, Newspaper reports, Character analysis and much more. Being assigned to do different types of writing really helped us with our English assessment.

We had many activities in our lessons which were educational, exciting and enjoyable as well. As Jameela said, there might not be any other way to make the class more interesting knowing that it is perfect already...

I thank Ms. Debbie for making this year an unforgettable experience and hope our next term will have the same excitement as the last!

  12. This blog is for the Year 8 Girls from The Winchester School, Dubai. We have this blog for our English lessons, where we update each term on what we have studied. This term, we studied one of Shakespeare's imaginative plays...

Shakespeare prospered in the reign of the valiant Queen Elizabeth 1. This man wrote 17 comedies, 10 historical plays and also 10 tragedies. Macbeth was one of those wonderfully extravagant tragedies born in the great mind of spectacular Shakespeare. Throughout our second term we carefully studied the plot, characters and their actions. Alongside these, we related other tasks such as letter writing, newspaper report writing, diary entries and character analyses to the amazing and enthralling story line of magnanimous Macbeth- all these using archaic vocabulary.

Whilst we did newspaper reports, we became aware of the various different sections and separate techniques used uniquely for making reports effective. Here is what our format included:

    1-Mention WHEN, WHERE, WHAT, WHO.
2-Mention the detailed facts of the incident. Strictly avoid opinions.
3-In this paragraph you focus more on quotes by witnesses, other people
involved in the incident and opinions.
4-Finally, mention the current situation of the incident, a prediction or a
decision that has been taken... basically, after effects of the incident.

Another writing skill that we learnt was how to write a character analysis. Not only does this help us during assessments and assignments, but also while learning of characters from other movies, books and surprisingly, even in real life. The techniques used to analyse and describe a character include:

    •Physical description
    •Personality
    •Ethics
    •Actions of the character
•Did the character influence others or was the character motivated by someone else?
    •Effects of the character's Behaviour
•Flat or Round- did the character stay the same through the entire story, or did he/she change?
    •Writer’s Thought

After this, we brushed up our diary writing skills, and these are the main aspects we came across:

    •Always write in first person.
•Use language features such as alliteration, metaphors and similes.
•Write as though you are actually talking to someone, who is, obviously, your Dear Diary.
•End the diary entry by saying something about what you are going to do next or what you predict is going to happen the next day.

Lastly, we did an in-depth study on informal letters, especially since it was one of the ACTIONS of the characters from Macbeth. The format is:

    •Salutation
•Greeting - here we include a time factor
    •Body :
    (1) - here personalization, supporting statements, facts and opinions are present
    (2) - we elaborate more on the details
•Conclusion- here again, personalization is necessary. Sum up your letter and let the reader know that you have finished writing it.
    •Sign Off

During the second term, we were re-introduced to an online english educational website called EDMODO. On this site, we are given assignments, quizzes and daily summaries of what was done in class for those who were absent, missed the lesson or just simply for a refresh. In general, EDMODO was a very valuable part of our second term in Year 8.

So, basically, Macbeth's tale was our main subject and focus of study in our second term, and we have successfully completed it-
ALL THANKS TO OUR AMAZING, PASSIONATE, ENTHUSIASTIC, UNDERSTANDING, CREATIVE, SMART, BRILLIANT, GREAT, AWESOME, SUPPORTIVE, RESPECTABLE MRS. DEBBIE MIRANDA (yes, we could go on with a lot more words...). It's only because of Mrs. Debbie that we have much more interactive, enjoyable and activity based learning in our English lessons.
Thank you very much for taking your valuable time to read this.

    By,
Nikita, Anjali, Simran K., Tanvi, and Marwa

P.S.: By the end of May, you can catch our freaky Frankenstein tale as well along with what we learnt in class. Don't forget it (it will be in the 'TERM 3' section). We hope you enjoyed reading our very first entry!

  14. The past term was a really nice experience, we changed our class and got to work with a new teacher and new classmates. Ms.Debbie made our English lessons really fun and interactive and the topic that we discussed 'Macbeth' was really different from other general topics in English. I had a wonderfull learning experience this term and I'm looking forward to the next term to learn and enhance my English.

  15. In this recent term, I honestly believe that I had an unexpected yet unceasingly interesting experience despite having class changes/transitions; because of these assigned changes, each student was able to adapt to a new, warm-welcoming environment which formed an exciting and comfortable learning atmosphere. Furthermore, the new learning atmosphere help introduce important concepts of English not considering whether my level/grade improved, remained or was unacceptable, as long as I properly understood and learned from the mistakes I came across! I look forward to an auspicious new term with more interactive collaborations in group activities with of course our brilliant-minded teacher- Mrs. Debbie Miranda!

  16. In the past term all our English lessons were really amazing. We had such a remarkable experience learning Shakespeare’s famous play (Macbeth). The usage of ICT in our lessons made the topic much more fascinating. Students’ involvement in the lessons has taken us to another level of confidence. Shakespeare’s effective use of vocabulary in his plays have helped me to know a wide new range of words and moreover, learning , understanding and using these words in my daily life has brought my English level higher.

  18. Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening ,

Wow! Term three... This term was super FAST! ( Im guessing they weren't kidding when they say " Time fly when you're having fun. " Back to the point. -> ) Well lets go back to what I've experienced and enjoyed during Term 2. For starters we had to learn about Shakespeare and, guess what play we learnt. No its not the famous 'Romeo And Juliet', it was 'Macbeth'. At starters I was completely lost about the play but thanks to Ms. Debbie, my problems faded away. She thought us the story in various ways.

    1. Watching The Video
    2. Re-enactment Of The Scenes In Macbeth.
    3.Letter Writing
    4. Character Analysis
    5. New Paper Writing

    Etc...

THANK YOU MS. DEBBIE! I'VE UNDERSTOOD THE STORY! :DD

I believe Shakespeare has thought us that there are many variety of vocabulary... Such unique words that are being neglected :( Hopefully, Those glorious words will be catchy for me so that i can use it in my daily life and of course to get that English level i'm chasing after.

This term three... I expect the unexpected. I know it may seem challenging yet, the impossible is possible. ( And yes, Im beg very positive! :D ) And may we please do some things that we've done in term two? Such as the Movie Watching and Re-enactment? :)

So term three, Show me what you've got?! Im up for the challenge! :D

In addition to that I am not able to form sentences without any grammitic error and with complex structures .
